Why Ash Wednesday?
The traditions and meanings about this day.
What is Ash Wednesday?
Throughout scripture we find the wearing of ashes and sackcloth is seen when people demonstrate their grief or desire for repentance. (Especially in OT passages.) In keeping with that practice Ash Wednesday, the day that marks the official beginning of Lent in the Christian year, celebrates that tradition as a way to express believers’ desire to repent and become more like our Christ. On the first day of Lent, we receive the mark of the cross, created from ashes as both a reminder of our need of redemption from sin, and our grief over Jesus’ suffering on our behalf to make Salvation possible. It’s a holy day of fasting and prayer for Christians in many denominations throughout the world.
If you’ve never experienced a Service of Ashes, Aldersgate invites you to come and be a part of this time of reflection and penitence with us. This Wednesday at 6 pm, we will gather in the sanctuary and worship the one who came to bear our sins away. We look forward to beginning, and completing the Easter journey together.
Join us in this Lenten journey at our Ash Wednesday service on February 14th at 6:00 p.m. Aldersgate is located at 1050 North Parkway in Jackson.
