REELFOOT RURAL MINISTRIES SCHOOL SUPPLY DRIVE

JULY 1 – 19

Believe it or not, it’s time to get ready for school at Reelfoot Rural Ministries!

RRM is collecting school supplies to be distributed to low-income families in July and August.  In 2017, over 500 students recieved supplies from RRM.

Aldersgate has faithfully supported this ministry year after year, and you are encouraged to participate by donating needed items beginning Sunday, July 1.  Our donations will be delivered to the Conference Council office on July 20 so that they can be taken to Reelfoot in time for the distribution.

You can pick up a list of needed supplies in the church narthex or CLICK HERE for a list of supplies

RIFA Soup Kitchen

July 26, 2018

Serving RIFA

Almost a year ago now, our Missions Team was considering if and how we could use our kitchen facilities to serve the hungry in our community.  The team invited coordinators from the RIFA Soup Kitchen to meet with them and offer their input. Following that meeting, our team members began working alongside another church, volunteering one Thursday night a month to serve dinner to the patrons at the soup kitchen.  In just a few months, Aldersgate was asked to consider being the host group on the 4th Thursday evening of month as the previous church had to step aside.  Our Missions Team was ready and brought the request to the church council.  The council approved, and our work began. Money remaining in the budget from the discontinued food pantry was designated as money to be used for this new outreach ministry.  The Missions Team accepted this request from RIFA, believing our church is called to feed the hungry and that the details of finances and volunteers would work out if we accepted the call.

So here we are – six months into this new ministry.  Many of our congregation have joined in serving. Have you participated yet?  Maybe you are still not sure what you can do or how to volunteer, so here are some ways you can help:

-Bring money to the communion rail each communion Sunday.  This offering is designated for the soup kitchen meals. It costs around $185 each month to provide the food.  If each of us gave just a couple of dollars each month, we could fund this ministry.

-Give an extra offering designated specifically for this ministry.  Just mark your envelope for the soup kitchen.

-Help prepare food at the church to be delivered to the soup kitchen.  (4:00 – 5:00 on 4th Thursday)  Sign up list is on the bulletin board.

-Serve the prepared meals to those who come to the soup kitchen.  (5:00 – 7:00 on 4th Thursday at RIFA soup kitchen on Airways Blvd.)  Sign up list is on the bulletin board.

-Make or provide cookies or brownies for desserts for the meal.  This would save on the cost of the meal. (240 cookies needed each month on 4th Thursday)

-Offer a short devotion before the meal at the soup kitchen on the 4th Thursday evening.

-Above all, pray for those who receive the meals and for our congregation as we serve them.

-NOTE:  Jan Matthews, chair of the Missions Team, can answer other questions you have or give you more information.

It’s always amazing to me how God can use us if we only listen for his call.  Thanks to the leadership of our Missions Team and their discernment, Aldersgate has an opportunity to serve the hungry in our community.  Let us continue to answer that call faithfully.

-Marianne Archer, Lay Leader

On Thursday, July 26th, we need some volunteers to help prepare food and transport it to RIFA by 5:15 p.m. and also some volunteers to help serve and clean up from 5:00 — 7:00 p.m.

If you can help out, please sign up at the bulletin board in the hallway near the pastor’s office.

Arise to Read

August 07, 2018

Do you have one hour each week that you could give to help second graders in the Jackson-Madison County schools? One hour of your time—a weekly commitment that could change the lives of two children this school year, not just in reading improvement but also by forming a relationship with an adult who cares. TEAMRead, a literacy program that partner churches with our public schools, is staffed by volunteer coaches who work with two second graders each week. The coach works individually with each student for 30 minutes on a provided list of sight words.

Now, you may be considering this mission opportunity but are not sure exactly what is required.

Here are a few answers:
Is there any special knowledge required?
No. You don’t have to have any previous experience working with children or teaching literacy. A training session IS required, and you will be provided everything you need to know at that time. In addition, leaders and room captains are available at all coaching sessions for “on the job” help.

Am I required to coach every week?
Yes. You must commit to coaching each week that school is in session. (We actually begin in September and end in April.) However, a substitute list is available for those few times that you aren’t able to be there.

When is the training session for this school year?
Fall Kickoff training dates are Monday, August 6, at 5 pm and Tuesday, August 7, at 10 am. All new and returning coaches are required to attend one of those training sessions.

How do I sign up?
You are encouraged to fill out an online application at www.arise2readjackson.org. If you would like to coach but can’t fill out the application online, talk to Marianne Archer. She will get a paper application for you.

I have other questions. Who can I contact?
I would encourage you to talk to me, Marianne Archer, or Sandy Rogers. We are currently volunteering from our church and either of us would be happy to share our experience with you. If you decide to volunteer this year, please tell one of us so that we know who is coaching from Aldersgate.

I realize this program requires a weekly commitment, and this may not be the mission opportunity for everyone. However, if you are considering it at all, please find out more. I truly believe this program is making a difference in the lives of the children we serve and in our city. In addition to working with some great children, it has been a blessing to meet and work with people from many different churches in our  city and see how we can serve our community together.

SIGN UP TO COACH NOW! TRAINING SESSIONS ARE ON AUGUST 6 AND AUGUST 7.
